Console wording caused guy to accidentally hose pool
We had a gentlemen this morning come into IRC. His thumb drive failed. So he "backup up" his config, then restored it. Turns out, by "back up" he means "option #11 in the console menu, set to no data", and by "restore" he means "option #12 in the console menu, thereby restoring my zpool structure with no data in it, and permanently hosing my entire pool".
After explaining to him what he should have done, and gently informing him that this was a permanent loss of his data, his view was that the wordage in the console was insufficiently clear to understand that one was backing up the POOL not the DATA. While this is clear in the documentation, not everyone reads documentation. I'd like to offer that we put maybe asterisks next to #11 and #12 in the console, with a note like:
(*) Note, the backup/restore options are meant for DISASTER RECOVERY OF A ZFS FILESYSTEM, not a FreeNAS configuration.
I don't have a lot of sympathy for someone that doesn't read the documentation before they do something in the console, but, still, it would seem user-sympathetic, and cost us nothing, to add just a little gentle warning there in the console.
May peace be upon you.
