Description

The new Services screen is an improvement, but can be improved even more. After some talking with Michael Dexter, we suggest this:

Buttons should be clearly marked as such. The wrench alone does not look like a button.

The status should be color-coded but also include text.

Terrible mockup created with awful google docs is attached. To clarify:

Service name

Status: Running in green background, Stopped in red background (with borders). Running is shown in italics or bold to make it look different from stopped, even for the color blind.

Start/Stop button: If the service is running, show a "not" symbol and the word Stop. If the service is running, show a power button symbol and the word Start. This needs to be a clear button like the current Start Now button.

Start at boot: This is one big button with a checkmark if enabled. Again, identifiably a button with a border, to make it clear it is clickable.

Edit: Another identifiable button. This button could have the wrench symbol before the word Edit, but should also include the text.

If column headers were added over the list, they could be Service, Status, Start/Stop, Start at boot, (none over edit), and the Start at boot fields for each could be just a checkbox.

Guys, I'm going to move this over to the new UI. I'd like to stop making changes to the old UI unless its a direct bugfix, or perhaps a couple minutes of work.

Hi Kris,

Please see the attached screenshot. I added service status with the background colour, added an icon to start/stop button, and added edit button with a wrench icon.

For the checkbox, I don't think it will look good if make the checkbox look like a button with border.
We already have this: when hovering on that label, the cursor will be a pointer which means clickable.
If you still want this modified design for the "enable at boot" then I can go ahead with it but I would suggest otherwise.

  • Target version changed from 11.0 to 11.1

Can we make the background color on the running/stopped field a bit larger, and align the fields vertically in the row? This already looks very good!

+1 To Warren's comments. Those changes should make it look fantastic!

Hi Warren and Kris,

How do you think the latest updates? vertical middle align and expand status background color.

#7 Updated by Michael Dexter over 3 years ago

"RUNNING" and "STOPPED" could use some padding on the left and right of those words plus all items could be spaced out horizontally but this is a huge improvement.

Could you please also post the "Classic" version?

Thanks!

I like the look-n-feel of it. I'd say if you could round the edges of the red/green boxes it would look similar to other elements, but aside from that it looks good.

Thanks, Warren and Kris!

How about this version?

Thanks Michael! added some padding on the status label.

What is the "Classic" version?

That looks great!

That looks very good! I'm tempted to suggest using the matching "play" icon on the start button, but it looks great the way it is.

By "classic", I think Michael meant the old GUI version, but I don't know if changes to that are planned.
