Description

I was wondering if this would be a good idea. I try to save a config whenever I make a change, but the time I feel it has the most exposure is when doing an update. If the system would offer to do a save config before doing the update, then the user would have an up-to-date saved file just in case the update fails and the config file that was last manually saved is not necessary the newest. When I've done an update, I've had a failure on my USB keys and had to rebuild them. If I hadn't the current config saved, then I'd have an exposure. If the system would simply offer the choice of making a config snapshot before the update takes place, then things are more reliable. Anyway if there is something that needs to be expounded upon, please let me know. :-)

Thanks for FreeNAS, cordially, Robert

Isn't this already done (using the system dataset)? There's an open ticket for easily restoring config backups from the system dataset, #24173

This is correct, but still no reason we can't prompt the user to do a backup.

VB, lets do this in the new UI. What I'm thinking is a modal popup that says "Before doing update, would you like to save a copy of the config?" Then we need a checkbox at the bottom that says "Don't show this again". If they click YES, it should immediately give them the config download via browser, when finished enable Close button, otherwise auto-close and continue with upgrade.

Could I suggest that the wording be changed from "Before doing an update..." to Before updating..."? To my ear, at least, the latter sounds better.

Thanks for the suggestion! The current open PR changes the wording to "Save configuration settings from this machine before updating?"
