Description

Section 11.1 of the 11.2-BETA2 User Guide discusses AFP shares. Apple is phasing out AFP and suggests that users switch to SMB; AFP also can't be used to share files with Apple's newer file system (APFS). See [[https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT207828]].

As a FreeNAS newbie configuring a system that will mainly be accessed from Apple devices, I just went through the painful process of setting up home directories and shares using AFP, only to stumble upon information on the Web discussing the switch to SMB and explaining how to use SMB from Apple computers. I then had to undo everything I had done and set things up anew using SMB.

I suggest you discuss this at the start of Section 11.1 in the User Guide. At a minimum, you should mention the phase out and identify (or at least provide links to lists of) versions of Apple software that require AFP versus those that can use SMB. Links to instructions on using SMB from Apple devices, overlapping AFP/SMB shares of individual datasets, Time Machine usage, etc. would also be welcome and eventually save some FreeNAS users much pain.

If this is happening in 11.2, could we get this in 11.2 as well? https://redmine.ixsystems.com/issues/23359

Along these lines, a bug (whether in OSX High Sierra or FreeNAS, I don't know) is be preventing ASR ("Apple Software Restore") from imaging an HFS volume to a sparsebundle image stored on a FreeNAS share via SMB. Connecting to the same share via AFP works just fine with ASR. FWIW, I can find no indication anywhere that ASR requires AFP. I have no reason to believe that it does. However, ASR+SMB crashes my machine (i.e., machine becomes unresponsive at console, SSH connection freezes then is dropped, pings timeout).

Accordingly, to the degree Apple software is IDed as suggested, ASR may be a candidate for inclusion.

While this certainly is related to the initial request, the request itself pertains strictly to documentation. So I suggest this be broken off as a separate issue, especially since we don't know if the bug is in FreeNAS or not. The issue would address the ASR bug, hopefully track it down, and fix it if it's in FreeNAS. Regarding Issue 42419, perhaps the following could be part of the revised documentation: "Some users have reported FreeNAS systems freezing when using Apple Software Restore (ASR) with SMB but not with AFP. See Issue <nnnnn> for the current status of this problem."
