Description

On an update from Freenas 11.1-U6 to Freenas11.2-Beta3 , unbeknownst to me, I had no DNS. I was attempting to create a Docker VM and it was failing. On the first boot of the VM, the alert box did not have a progress bar on a download. In fact the only thing that showed up was a close button. Eventually The VM reported itself as running. I connected via the shell and nothing ever booted, it just hung at :

cu -l /dev/nmdm5B

[root@blkninja ~]# cu -l /dev/nmdm5B
Connected

Eventually I thought to see if RancherOS was properly downloaded -- it was not: /mnt/blackninja/.bhyve_containers/iso_files/ was empty. I went to bed and the following morning I wondered if it was because I had no dns resolution. This issue has happened to me in the past , but usually in the jails, not in my freenas OS. My suspicions were correct, I did not have any name resolution. Once I added a dns host in /etc/resolve.conf , things went smoothly. I do believe if this is occuring we should give a warning to the user we cannot retrieve the rancheros image at this time. Now I'm not sure if this happens if we do not have access to the internet at all or if it was because of my specific situation, but that should be tested for as well!

Reproduction Steps
- Fresh install of Freenas 11.2-Beta3
- Make sure you have no dns resolution
- Try to setup a docker vm
- Boot it up (see the lack of progress bar and only a close button)
- Eventually when it boots, notice the terminal hanging after Connect
- Then Note that the rancheros image was never downloaded

I was able to trigger docker fetch failure. As of right now error looks quite explanatory as a part of latest api rewrite. I am closing the issue as there is nothing needs to be done.
